There are some invites that land in your inbox and you already know you’re going to say yes before you’ve even finished reading the email. This was one of them. When Thee Sneak Preview received the invitation to be part of Windhoek Lager’s first Midweek Session at Katy’s Palace Bar in Kramerville, Sandton, we knew this wasn’t going to be your usual Wednesday night.
For starters, Windhoek Lager was celebrating the return of something that many South Africans will remember the 330ml bottle. But then there was the twist. 340ml was becoming 330ml. Now, if you know the legendary Mozambican band 340ml, you know exactly why this was going to be interesting. For one night, the four-piece we know as 340ml was stepping onto a South African stage as 330ml.
Yebo, numbers were being played with, and Windhoek Lager had found a rather lekker way to bring the return of the 330ml bottle to life. And Thee Sneak Preview was there for it. On Wednesday, 9 September, Katy’s Palace Bar was buzzing as guests traded the usual midweek grind for good music, good company and a cold Windhoek Lager. Because let’s be honest, Wednesday in Mzansi is usually that day where everyone is just trying to survive.
Monday? Yoh.
Tuesday? Still recovering.
Wednesday? “We’re almost there.”
Thursday? “Tomorrow is Friday.”
But Windhoek decided to ask a different question:
“What’s your reason this week?”
And suddenly, Wednesday had a reason.
Maybe you were celebrating something.
Maybe you hadn’t seen your friends in a while.
Maybe you were getting married on Saturday.
Or maybe you simply wanted to get out of the house and enjoy yourself.
Honestly, that’s reason enough.
For us, the reason was simple: we had been invited, 330ml was making its debut and 340ml was about to give us a midweek soundtrack. So, obviously, we pulled up.
WHEN 340ML BECAME 330ML
There was something quite special about watching the concept unfold in front of us. 340ml didn’t suddenly become a different band. The four original members were still there. The sound was still there. The chemistry was still there. The creativity was still there. Only the number had changed.
340ml became 330ml.
And if we’re putting this into proper Kasi language, let’s just say they pulled a serious numbers switch-up.
“Sharp, today we’re 330ml.”
That’s basically what happened.
But jokes aside, the idea was clever because it didn’t try too hard.
It took something as simple as the return of a 330ml bottle and connected it to a band whose name was already sitting right there waiting for the punchline.
And when the band hit the stage, the whole thing made sense.
This wasn’t just a branding exercise.
It was a proper music moment.
The crowd was ready.
The drinks were cold.
And 330ml — formerly known as 340ml — was doing what 340ml does best.
Giving people music.
AND YES, THIS WAS A FIRST
For Thee Sneak Preview, one of the biggest highlights was knowing that we were witnessing something that had never happened in South Africa before.
340ml performing live as 330ml.
For the first time.
Live.
In front of a South African crowd.
There is something different about witnessing these moments in person.
You can read about them afterwards.
You can see the pictures.
You can watch the videos on social media.
But being in the room when it happens is a completely different experience.
You hear the crowd react.
You see the smiles.
You see people pulling out their phones.
You watch the musicians embrace the concept.
And somewhere between the music, the laughter and the cold Windhoek Lager, you realise that you’re watching something that people will later say:
“I was there.”
And yes, we were there.
SO, WHAT’S YOUR REASON?
That question kept coming back throughout the evening.
“What’s your reason this week?”
Thabo Letsoalo had perhaps one of the biggest reasons of the night. “Because I’m getting married on Saturday and wanted to start the celebrations early!” Well, Thabo, we can’t argue with that.
Then there was Thembisa Zulu, who had a much simpler reason: “I’m a big fan of 340ml, so getting to see them live as 330ml for the night was a great reason to get out on a Wednesday.”
And we get it. Because if you’ve followed 340ml over the years, watching them embrace the 330ml concept was part of the fun.
Shaun Mckenzie probably summed it up best: “I’ve followed 340ml for years, so seeing them lean into becoming ‘330ml’ for the night was the cleverest excuse I’ve had for a midweek beer in a long time. A cold Windhoek Lager, a band in on their own joke, and a Wednesday that didn’t feel like a Wednesday. That’s a great reason worth getting out for.”
Exactly. A Wednesday that didn’t feel like a Wednesday. That’s the whole point.
IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE BIG OCCASION
Sometimes we get so caught up in waiting for the weekend that we forget to enjoy the week.
We wait for Friday to see our friends.
We wait for Saturday to go out.
We wait for birthdays, weddings, holidays and long weekends before we make time for one another.
But maybe we don’t always need a big reason.
Maybe the reason is your people.
Maybe the reason is the music.
Maybe the reason is simply saying:
“Hawu, let’s go!”
And that’s what the Windhoek Lager Midweek Session managed to capture.
It wasn’t about forcing people to celebrate.t was about reminding them that there is nothing wrong with creating your own moment.
Keval Ramraj, Marketing Manager at Windhoek Beer South Africa, said the return of the 330ml Lager bottle provided an opportunity to reconnect people with what Windhoek stands for. “The return of the 330ml Lager bottle gave us an opportunity to remind people what Windhoek has always stood for – real beer enjoyed with real people. Tonight was about making space in the middle of a busy week to reconnect, share a reason and enjoy great South African music together. Seeing those reasons come to life made the evening especially meaningful.”
And from where we were standing, that message wasn’t difficult to understand.
People were together.
People were laughing.
People were singing.
People were catching up.
People were simply enjoying being around each other.
Sometimes that’s all you need.
“WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER”
For 340ml band member Tiago Correia-Paulo, the evening was about something even bigger than the clever 330ml name change. “We need more reminders that we always thrive better as a community, and that we should get together as often as possible to celebrate each other. The simple fact is, we’re all in this together!” And perhaps that is why the evening felt so natural. Because beneath the campaign, beneath the numbers and beneath the clever branding, there was something very human happening. People were making time for each other. And in a city like Johannesburg, where everyone seems to be rushing somewhere, that’s actually quite something.
THEE SNEAK PREVIEW WAS JAMMING
For us, the invite was more than just another event on the calendar. It was an opportunity to be part of the return of the 330ml Windhoek Lager bottle, experience the first Windhoek Midweek Session and, most importantly, witness 340ml pull off one of the smoothest numbers games we’ve seen in a while.
We came expecting 340ml.
We got 330ml.
And honestly?
We weren’t complaining.
The music was right.
The vibe was right.
The people were right.
The Windhoek was cold.
And Wednesday?
Well, Wednesday was definitely not feeling like Wednesday.
So if anyone asks what our reason was this week, we’ll keep it simple:
Windhoek Lager invited us.
340ml became 330ml.
And we had to be there.
Sometimes you don’t need a reason to jam. But when one comes knocking, you better pull up.
