The BMW 7 Series luxury sedan has triumphed in the 2024 South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition, adding another win to the German automaker’s impressive record. This victory marks the seventh time a BMW has claimed the overall COTY title.
The announcement came during a gala event held in Johannesburg on Wednesday. The 7 Series not only secured the top honor but also emerged victorious in the Luxury class. Additionally, BMW extended its dominance by taking home two further category awards: the X1 winning Family and the M2 conquering Performance.
Throughout the rigorous evaluation process, the 7 Series impressed the COTY jury panel comprised of members from the South African Guild of Mobility Journalists (SAGMJ). The luxury sedan emerged as the standout contender among 18 finalists, which were themselves selected from a pool of 80 qualifying vehicles across various categories.
The 2024 COTY competition also recognized other deserving contenders. The Suzuki Fronx secured second place overall and the Budget/Compact category win. In the public realm, the Mahindra Scorpio-N garnered both the Adventure SUV category win and the “Motor Enthusiasts Choice” award determined by a social media campaign.
