Hloni Modise Matau, the founder of Basadi In Music Awards (BIMA), has carved a niche for herself in the music industry through her innovative leadership and unwavering dedication to promoting women in music. Her journey, from humble beginnings to becoming a trailblazer in the industry, is a story of perseverance, passion, and vision.

Hloni’s journey in the music industry began at the tender age of 19. She started her career as a booking agent, working at a company where she quickly demonstrated her potential and work ethic. Reflecting on these early days, Hloni recalls, “I was just 19 when I began working as a booking agent. From there, I slowly worked my way up.” Her early experiences in the industry laid a strong foundation, teaching her the ins and outs of the music business and sparking her passion for the industry.

Hloni’s hard work and determination did not go unnoticed. She joined the local division of SONY Music, starting as a marketing assistant. Her dedication and talent saw her rise through the ranks to become a label manager. During her time at SONY Music, Hloni honed her skills in marketing, artist management, and strategic planning, gaining invaluable experience that would later fuel her own entrepreneurial ventures.

The idea for Basadi In Music Awards was born out of Hloni’s desire to create a platform that celebrated and uplifted women in the music industry. Inspired by Oprah’s Legend Gala, Hloni envisioned an event that would bring together powerful women in music for a greater cause. She recalled, “Watching Oprah’s Legend Gala made me realize the impact of bringing influential women together. I wanted to create something similar for women in South Africa.”

In 2022, on International Women’s Day, Hloni’s vision became a reality with the launch of Basadi In Music Awards. The event was a resounding success, bringing together multi-generational artists and showcasing the incredible talent of women in the music industry. “Seeing all these powerful artists in one room was a life-changing moment for me,” Hloni shared. “It was exactly how I envisioned it, with artists sharing stories and inspiring each other.”

Beyond BIMA, Hloni founded HM Entertainment, a dynamic PR agency, and the Hloni Modise Foundation. These ventures further underscore her commitment to nurturing talent and creating opportunities for others in the industry. HM Entertainment focuses on strategic marketing and public relations for artists, while the Hloni Modise Foundation aims to support and empower young, aspiring musicians.

Hloni’s journey has not been without challenges. Breaking into the music industry and establishing a name for herself required resilience and determination. She faced financial constraints, industry skepticism, and the pressures of balancing multiple roles. However, her unwavering belief in her vision and her relentless pursuit of excellence saw her overcome these obstacles.

Hloni Modise Matau’s impact on the music industry is profound. Through BIMA, she has created a platform that not only celebrates women’s achievements but also provides them with opportunities for growth and recognition. Her efforts have inspired countless women to pursue their dreams in music and beyond.

Her leadership style, characterized by inclusivity and empowerment, has set a new standard in the industry. Hloni believes in the power of representation and strives to ensure that diverse voices are heard and celebrated. “Music is diverse, and it’s important to have different representation. At BIMA, we ensure that diversity is reflected in our events,” she emphasized.

Hloni Modise Matau’s career is a testament to the power of vision, hard work, and dedication. From her early days as a booking agent to becoming the founder of Basadi In Music Awards, she has continuously broken barriers and set new benchmarks in the music industry. Her legacy of empowerment, representation, and inspiration will undoubtedly continue to influence and shape the industry for years to come. As Hloni herself says, “The journey is ongoing, and there is still so much more to achieve.”
