Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA) proudly announces its partnership with the South African Football Association (SAFA), marking a significant step in VWGA’s commitment to advancing girls’ and women’s football in South Africa. Through this partnership, all national women’s teams, including the under-20 (Basetsana), under-17 (Bantwana), and under-15 squads, will benefit from increased support and resources.
Niels Wichmann, Brand Head of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, highlighted the deeper purpose behind the collaboration: “Volkswagen believes that in South Africa, sport, especially soccer, is more than just a game, as it has the potential to play a vital role in youth development. Volkswagen is passionate about ‘Moving People Forward’ and is committed to the growth and sustainability of women’s soccer.”
Wichmann emphasized Volkswagen’s ambition to empower the women’s teams: “Just as Volkswagen empowers people every day to reach their destinations, we hope to empower the national women’s soccer teams to reach their top level on the continent in their respective age groups.”
SAFA President Dr. Danny Jordaan welcomed Volkswagen’s involvement: “We welcome Volkswagen to the SAFA partner family. The pathway of women’s football needed partners that will support football at grassroots through scouts and women’s competitions, all the way to the national teams, including Banyana Banyana. Our ability to find new talent and manage logistical support is crucial.”
Volkswagen’s commitment extends beyond the field, aiming to amplify community impact, support player development, and highlight role models to inspire the next generation of young female players.
The partnership includes the provision of Volkswagen vehicles, including the Caddy Kombi Maxi, Crafter 50 23-seater, Tiguan Allspace, and T-Cross, ensuring the teams have the mobility resources to support their journey to success.
