Kariega, South Africa – December 6, 2013, marked the inauguration of a transformative initiative by Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) – the VW PeoplePavilion. A testament to fostering community, recreation, and engagement, this R30-million facility was envisioned to create a strong sense of belonging among VWSA employees in Kariega and their families, as well as the wider community.
A decade since its inception, the PeoplePavilion stands not only as a monument to this vision but as an integral part of Kariega’s community. Over the past 10 years, more than R3.5 million has been invested in maintaining the facility, ensuring it remains a cutting-edge center catering to the needs of its visitors.
From its opening until November 30, 2023, the PeoplePavilion has warmly welcomed over 1,029,168 visitors, with 59,613 attendees in the first 11 months of 2023. Serving as a hub for numerous events, the multipurpose hall, clubhouse, sports fields, and fully-equipped gym have hosted a total of 1,867 gatherings, spanning from celebratory occasions like wedding receptions and birthday parties to charitable fundraisers.
The gym itself has seen an impressive influx of 259,761 visitors, while the sports fields have been a bustling arena for various sports embraced by the VWSA workforce. Netball, soccer, cricket, baseball, volleyball, and Judo are among the array of sports provided to employees, fostering a culture of physical activity and camaraderie.
Earlier this year, the PeoplePavilion achieved a remarkable milestone by welcoming its 1-millionth visitor, Elvida Klue, in June, marking a momentous occasion in the facility’s legacy.
Reflecting on the Pavilion’s impact, Andile Dlamini, Head of Group Communications at VWSA, expressed, “From its inception, the VW PeoplePavilion aimed to enhance the lives of our employees and their families by promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and offering recreational spaces. Over the past decade, we’ve achieved this goal and remain committed to continuing this legacy. The PeoplePavilion team has made a significant and meaningful contribution to our workforce, and we aim to build on this foundation in the years ahead.”
As the VW PeoplePavilion commemorates its 10th anniversary, it stands as a beacon of community support, wellness, and unity, embodying the values of Volkswagen Group South Africa in nurturing a thriving and engaged community in Kariega.
