Changan Commercial is set to return to South Africa next month, marking the revival of a brand that played a key role in enabling small businesses and entrepreneurs. Known locally under the Chana name, the brand built a strong reputation for cost-effective, reliable, and hard-working vehicles.
Now reintroduced under the Changan Commercial banner, the brand returns at a time when demand for accessible transport solutions continues to grow across South Africa’s SME and logistics sectors. The new range, consisting of five models, represents a modern evolution of the vehicles that supported thousands of local businesses, and are now backed by a 5 year/200,000km manufacture warranty.

The rollout is led by Jameel Motors South Africa, supported by an expanding dealer and aftersales network to ensure access to parts, service and support nationwide. “Chana built a strong reputation in South Africa as a trusted partner for small and medium-sized enterprises,” says Marinus Venter, Country Manager of Jameel Motors South Africa. “With Changan Commercial, we are building on that legacy by reintroducing a product that is proven, trusted and ready to support a new generation of South African businesses.”
A Legacy Built on Work and Reliability
Changan’s commercial vehicle journey began in 1984, when the company transitioned into a dedicated civilian vehicle manufacturer and introduced its first mass-produced light commercial vehicles. Developed through a technical partnership with Suzuki, these early microvans and mini-trucks laid the foundation for high-volume, accessible mobility solutions.
Throughout the 1990s, Changan expanded its LCV offering, building the scale and technical capability to compete in high-demand commercial segments. This evolution culminated in the launch of the first-generation Changan Star in 1999 – a pivotal model that introduced improved safety and broader application across industries.
The Star range went on to achieve significant global success, with cumulative sales exceeding 10 million units to date and holding the number one position in its segment in China for 8 consecutive years. As the range evolved, it expanded into multiple configurations and markets, becoming a widely adopted solution for small businesses and fleet operators worldwide.
In South Africa, the Chana brand became a familiar presence across industries – from trade and services to logistics and small-scale distribution – with 8,456 units sold during its time in market, many of which are still actively supporting businesses today.
A Timely Return for South Africa
South Africa’s SME-driven economy relies heavily on affordable, dependable and practical transport to keep businesses operating efficiently. Changan Commercial’s return responds directly to this need, introducing a new generation of vehicles shaped by decades of commercial vehicle expertise and modern engineering.
This return reinforces the brand’s role as a long-term partner to South African businesses. Supported by a proven global track record, a recognised local legacy and an expanding dealer and aftersales network, Changan Commercial is well positioned to once again become a trusted name in the country’s light commercial vehicle market.
